Daphnis et Chloé

L’univers de Chagall est constitué d’histoires vécues et imaginaires, régulièrement convoquées dans cette œuvre ample et complexe. Au début des années 1960,  il illustre Daphnis et Chloé. Dans ce livre inspiré, le peintre retrouve la lumière et les couleurs de l’île enchanteresse de Poros, en Grèce, où il séjourne afin d’être au plus près de cette vision pastorale invoquée par Longus. Les personnages et les paysages évoqués dans cet éden saturé de vibrations colorées font de ce livre un des sommets de l’édition d’art. La communion entre le peintre et l’écrivain, tel un cordon ombilical, relie par des liens désormais indéfectibles le texte à l’illustration lithographiée.

Chagall’s universe is composed of personal and imaginary experiences, both of which regularly appear throughout his ample and complex body of work. At the beginning of the 1960’s, he illustrated Longus’ Daphnis and  Chloe. In this exceptional book, the painter rediscovers the light and colour of the enchanted island of Poros, in Greece, where he was staying to be as close as possible to the Greek author’s pastoral vision. The characters and landscapes in an Eden saturated with vibrations of colour make this work one of the most remarkable illustrated books of all time. The communion etween writer and painter is such that the text and the lithographical illustrations are joined as if by an umbilical cord.
