La Russie

Durant son premier séjour à Paris, en 1911, Chagall installe son atelier à la Ruche, où vivent de nombreux artistes. Il est ébloui par tout ce qu’il découvre, les musées, la manière de vivre, la langue qu’il apprend… Tout est source d’émerveillement ! Chagall reste cependant fidèle à son pays natal ; il en garde la nostalgie et le convoque en rappel dans sa peinture. Son retour en Russie en 1914 et le début de la Première Guerre mondiale le contraignent à y demeurer. Il en profitera pour se marier avec Bella et rencontrer avec bonheur les poètes de son pays, ceux qui renvoient à l’âme russe, Alexandre Blok, Essénine, Maïakovski ou Pasternak.

During his first stay in Paris, in 1911, Chagall installed his workshop in La Ruche, an area that was home to many artists. He was amazed by everything he discovered: museums, the way of life, the new language he was learning... Everything was a source of wonder! Yet he remained loyal to his homeland and expressed his feelings of nostalgia through his paintings. He returned to Russia in 1914 and was forced to remain there when the First World War began. During this time, he married Bella and took the opportunity to meet Russian poets that embodied the “Russian soul”, such as Alexander Blok, Esenin, Mayakovsky or Pasternak.
