            Standing Figures

The discovery of non-western art, especially African sculpture, had been a critical experience for Moore in the 1920s and continued to influence him in later years. These wood sculptures inspired Moore to carve the material directly, and to suggest a vertical elevation. This is how Moore arrived at the idea of upright and monolithic forms that play with the effects of gravity. Starting with a piece of bone enlarged to the human scale or combining interior/exterior forms, verticality became one of the major themes of Moore’s work.

                • I visited the exhibition in early September and was completely overwhelmed. In bringing together so many different works one has a very strong, and very moving impress of Henry Moore. Thank you - it was wonderful
